In the Spanish language, "el caracol" literally means "snail." However, in the city of Chichen Itza, "El Caracol" refers to the city's singular observatory, which is aligned with the orbit of Venus. It is believed that the planet Venus was considered to be a war god to the Mayans. Thus, from the observatory, they could view changes in the sky and appropriately map out the times for battles.
